The lymphatic system is the frontline in the body's defense mechanisms. It filters out disease-causing organisms, such as viruses and bacteria, distributes fluids and nutrients in the body, and drains excess fluids and protein so that tissues do not swell up. It also supports all other critical systems in the body, including the immune, digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems.
However, unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system has no central pump. Its movement is dependent on muscular contraction, breathing, and manual manipulation, such as massage.
